3CL: Adelphia do good, ALFA are humiliated

CONCAFA Champions League | Group Stages | 2017-18

We’re now halfway through the group stages of the 3CL, so it’s a good time to take stock of the progress of the ESL teams and the other big teams.

In group A, Juvenese have shown to be solid, even though they managed a 0-0 draw away to Centurions. Two wins before that (@ Angel 3-2, vs Stade Lenseille 3-0). ESL’s Angel FC have won their other two games after getting off to a losing start at home to Juvenese. They seem quite assured of making their way through to the last 16.  Continue reading “3CL: Adelphia do good, ALFA are humiliated”

WEFA World Nations Cup 2018 Qualifiers | CONCAFA

It had come down to the last round of matches. If Eboria won against Latania, they were getting the automatic spot, draw or lose- and Marida could snatch that spot with a win away to Saint Louis.

Eboria won 2-0 at home, thanks to goals from Jake Carter and Roman Baric. Latania’s Mario Lotti hit the post and bar either side of half-time, teenage prodigy Mauro Bellatoni also missed essentially an open goal when it was 1-0. Baric’s strike with eleven minutes remaining meant that what was happening in Saint Louis was irrelevant. With qualification settled, it’s time to sort out the front end of the team- as they will possibly be without a fully fit Matt Murphy for the run up to the finals.

Marida won 3-0, thanks to a brace from Carlos Ricardo and a (now) rare goal from -Manha. Césaro limped off before the interval, which will be of concern for Nova Porto. Félix did not play either, following a minor injury picked up in the previous game.

Marida will now have a two-legged play-off against New Zealand for a place in the World Nations Cup finals next summer.

Adelphia Arsenal got revenge for last season’s cup final defeat to Juvenese, with a frantic opening to this year’s final. Left Back Ryan Givens broke free down the left and was tripped inside the box by Hugo Alaves, resulting in a penalty kick. Henry Thomas stepped up and broke the deadlock in the fourth minute. Just two minutes later, perhaps mirroring last Sunday’s switch-off against Elverpool, Adelphia dropped their intensity for a moment and Tigres capitalised. A good move involving Pizano and Gillet set up Dario Álvarez for the equaliser, a low crafted shot past a helpless Alberto in goal.

Both teams traded chances in a very open first half; Gillet and Pizano going close for Tigres, Thomas, Mowabé and Bartowski going close for Adelphia. The Arsenal converted a chance out of seemingly nothing after two successive over-hit crosses had opened up the Tigres penalty area. Luis Cesar popped the ball back in and Diego Martinez, playing his very last game for Adelphia, reacted first and slotted the ball past Fredi.

Tigres pressed heavily for the equaliser in the second half, but found Adelphia’s two lines of four impossible to fully break down. Thomas and substitute Jordan Wilcox missed chances to put the tie beyond any doubt with counter-attacks. Adelphia’s Captain Jerome Mowabé kissed the turf in joy at the final whistle- Adelphia, for the second time in their 21 year history, were CONCAFA Club Champions!
