CEFA Super Cup 2018

ADELPHIA ARSENAL 4-0 OLYMPIANS

Luis Velasquez and Robin Overgaard both hit a brace as the defending ESL champions easily overcame Olympians in the Super Cup. Adelphia rested Daniel Ayandele and Jordan Wilcox, who returned late from WEFA World Nations Cup duty- but they were not missed. Overgaard opened the scoring, tapping in Marquez’s cross. Velasquez added two just before half time. Overgaard got the fourth  right on the hour mark.

It seemed like business as usual for Adelphia Arsenal, who are now without part of the spine of the team, in ex-captain Jerome Mowabé and goalscorer Henry Thomas.

The new ESL season starts on Friday night with Adelphia kicking off in their new home- the DIY Depot Arena (sharing with the PFL’s Adelphia Phoenix)  against ESL newcomers Mayona City.

FC CORATIA  3-4  ADELPHIA ARSENAL

Adelphia Arsenal signed off the ESL 2017-18 season as champions, with an entertaining 4-3 win over FC Coratia. Already assured of the title, the Adelphia team looked relaxed and composed, running into a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Jordan Wilcox and Luis Velazquez. They led 4-1, until two late goals from Costanzo and Soares made it closer than it had appeared for most of the game. Coratia will be proud of their first ever season in the ESL. Adelphia Arsenal got revenge for last season’s cup final defeat to Juvenese, with a frantic opening to this year’s final. Left Back Ryan Givens broke free down the left and was tripped inside the box by Hugo Alaves, resulting in a penalty kick. Henry Thomas stepped up and broke the deadlock in the fourth minute. Just two minutes later, perhaps mirroring last Sunday’s switch-off against Elverpool, Adelphia dropped their intensity for a moment and Tigres capitalised. A good move involving Pizano and Gillet set up Dario Álvarez for the equaliser, a low crafted shot past a helpless Alberto in goal.

Both teams traded chances in a very open first half; Gillet and Pizano going close for Tigres, Thomas, Mowabé and Bartowski going close for Adelphia. The Arsenal converted a chance out of seemingly nothing after two successive over-hit crosses had opened up the Tigres penalty area. Luis Cesar popped the ball back in and Diego Martinez, playing his very last game for Adelphia, reacted first and slotted the ball past Fredi.

Tigres pressed heavily for the equaliser in the second half, but found Adelphia’s two lines of four impossible to fully break down. Thomas and substitute Jordan Wilcox missed chances to put the tie beyond any doubt with counter-attacks. Adelphia’s Captain Jerome Mowabé kissed the turf in joy at the final whistle- Adelphia, for the second time in their 21 year history, were CONCAFA Club Champions!

Adelphia Arsenal maintained their lead at the top of the ESL with a fine display against title-contenders Elverpool. Elverpool haven’t won in five games now and there needs to be a regrouping over the winter break. Diego Martinez opened the scoring, heading in from Bartowski’s corner kick. Twelve minutes after the restart, he doubled the lead with a superb one-two with Henry Thomas. Continue reading “Ending in style! Adelphia vs Elverpool”
