3CL: Two ESL sides crash out, Favourites advance

CONCAFA Champions League | Last Sixteen | 2nd Legs

Last night’s last sixteen second leg games saw greatness, goals and a little more controversy.

The Nova Porto – AS Milazio match was an open affair. With Milazio needing a lot to advance- they went for it. They were two up after twenty eight minutes, with Cozza and Boschkamp scoring, only to concede an own goal just before half-time. When Cozza bagged his second, the away fans were singing, as 3-3 on agg, Milazio would go through on away goals. With 20 minutes left, Xavi Ramires crossed for Diego Martinez to head the hosts through to the next round, breaking Milazio’s hearts. Bosch missed a chance at the death to take them through.

Independiente lost 1-0 to Centurions in the return game, but went through 3-2 on aggregate. They never really looked like going out and were surprised to lose this game.

Following last week’s controversial first leg, it reigned in Adelphia, where Giapoli defeated the reigning champions Adelphia Arsenal 4-2 on agg. Adelphia coach Frank Lebeau and several players will be suspended for the opening games next season- Henry Thomas, Eddie James and Ryan Givens all picked up two yellow cards over the two games.

In a carbon-copy of the first game, New Jorg United cruised over Club Panteras 2-0. Peter Aguba and Aron Mulder doubled the advantage, never looking in any danger. The next round will provide a bigger question for this team.

Rosano Centrale had a pedestrian 1-1 draw with Galencia. The Latanians had made easy work of this two weeks ago, Gala had no real answers and seemed to get more out of the game than they deserved.

In the tie of the round, ESL Champions ALFA were beating Real Mardis in Mardis 3-1 for 90 minutes (4-4 on agg). After trailing 1-0 after only four minutes to a dazzling Suárez goal, they came back. On the half-hour, Roman Baric broke through and slotted home. Second half stunners from Drew Campbell and Laurent Féyembé took the game to extra time. In extra-time, Suárez struck from the spot, following Abou Diarra’s red card for a foul on Félix in the box. ALFA went down to 9 men, when Danny Marshall received a straight red for his lunging sliding tackle on Antonio Cruz. They did so well to take it to extra-time but then fell apart and lost 5-4 on aggregate.

Juvenese hammered RC Santos 3-0, to win 5-2 on aggregate.  Lopes, Soares and Estevez completed the rout. Santos had trailed on away goals and lacked the bite up front to make a challenge.

Angel FC drew 1-1 with last year’s losing finalists- Club Tigres, to knock them out on away goals rule. Tracy Jackson gave them a first half lead that gave them the big advantage. Needing two goals to advance, Tigres could only manage one, with veteran Carlos Pinto stabbing home a penalty kick late on.
