WEFA HQ | World Nations Cup
The WEFA Executive Congress has extended the timetable for expanding the prestigious World Nations Cup, so that a full and proper investigation can be undertaken.
The only problem with the current format is perhaps the allocation of teams. With 32 places up for grabs, it is important for the best teams to be able to show their talents off. This is why UEFA and CONMEBOL get such a high ratio of teams competing.
On the table, to be fully investigated and tested and debated are expansions to 40 teams or even going as far as 48. The most important factor is said to be the competition quality, which must not suffer as a result of increasing the pot. Many opponents to expansion say that increasing the number of participating nations will dilute the competition.
We will all be awaiting the commission’s findings, which will be due in May 2017. This does not affect the 2018 World Nations Cup in Spain & Portugal and the 2022 World Nations Cup, to be held in China.
