(Adelphia Arsenal won 3-1 after penalty shoot-out)

The 2016-17 season got officially underway on Sunday, with the Cup-winners Adelphia Arsenal defeating ESL League champions Olympians after a penalty shoot-out.

Olympians had the early run, scoring after Alberto spilled Hernandinho’s wild shot straight into the path of young sniper Nelinho. They should have double their lead twice before half time, with Hernandinho and Bockel wasting chances. Adelphia had a few chances of their own just before the first half ended, and started strong in the second half. Persistence paid off in the end when Henry Thomas added another beauty following a lofted return pass from debutant Velasquez. With time running out, Martinez missed a sitter, followed by Francis looping a header over at the other end.

No extra time, straight onto penalties. Adelphia scored three, Alberto was thee hero, saving two Olympians spot-kicks. Captain Jerome Mowabe tucked in their last penalty making it, at 3-1, an unassailable lead. Mowabe then held the cup aloft for the Adelphia Arsenal fans to soak in the atmosphere- and more silverware.
