WEFA World Nations Cup 2018 | 1/4 Final

Eboria were eliminated at the Quarter-final stage by a well- attuned Brazil team.

First-half goals from Paulinho and Coutinho sealed Eboria’s fate. They had played differently, more defensively- due to the attacking nature of Brazil. With Cooper and Myers penned back more, they didn’t look as sharp up front. Baric, at times, looked isolated up front.

The team were delighted to have got into the last eight, but could not match Marida’s fantastic result (beating Belgium) and advance.

Eboria (4-3-3): Chambers, Myers (sub Givens), Cooper, Vladic, Ayandele (C), Mills (sub Lewis), Harrison, Wilcox, Johnson (sub Freeman),  Thomas, Baric.

Roman Baric’s goal once again guides Eboria through to the next phase, safely seeing off the Ticos 1-0.

Eboria has a tough time against a resilient and rough n’ ready Costa Rica side. Los Ticos  seemed happy to play with five at the back and try to catch out the Golden Stars on the counter. They nearly did it too, when Joel Campbell broke through and headed past an onrushing Scott Chambers- only for Mark Vladic to clear the ball moments before it could cross the line.

Eboria’s goal came in the 66th minute. Jordan Wilcox played a perfect through ball to Roman Baric, who flicked the ball deftly over Keylor Navas and into an empty goal.

Costa Rica had a shout for a late penalty waived off from the referee, replay’s showed that it was a 50-50 call, with Vladic perhaps getting away with the benefit of the doubt for his handball. It was judged to not be intentional and therefore not a penalty.

Eboria couldn’t double their lead and had to hang on for the last few minutes, with long balls peppered into their box. Thankfully, the Golden Stars’ defence held strong and they saw through to the final whistle intact.

Next up? Only the favourites, Brazil in the final Quarter Final tie!

Eboria (4-3-3): Chambers, Cooper, Myers (sub Givens), Ayandele (C), Vladic, Harrison, Mills (sub Lewis), Wilcox, Johnson (sub Carter), Thomas, Baric.

WNC18: Marida into last 8 as Carlos beats Kasper

WNC18: Marida into last 8 as Carlos beats Kasper

WEFA World Nations Cup 2018 | Last 16

Carlos Ricardo broke the deadlock and Danish hearts with the only goal in this even, tense and hard-fought last 16 match.

Both teams had tested out goalkeepers Kasper Schmeichel and Fabio in the first half- but no one could get past these towering forces. It changed though, seven minutes into the second half, when Ricardo fiercely won a tackle on the edge of the box and drilled the ball past a helpless Dane in the goalmouth. Replays showed Kasper had got the tiniest  of touches on the ball, but it went in off the post.

Denmark pressed to get back into the game, going to three up front for the last 15 minutes. Marida almost caught them out on the counter. For once, striker Rolando was wasteful in front of goal. Schmeichel also went up front for stoppage time, to no avail.

Marida will play Belgium on Sunday afternoon in the third Quarter-final match.

Marida (4-3-3):  Fabio, Marcos (sub Simão), Valdo, Ivandro (C), Xavi Ramires, Felipe (sub Paulito), Lieira, Ricardo, Césaro, Félix Jr, Rolando.

WEFA World Nations Cup 2018 | Group G

Eboria 2-3 Belgium

Belgium took top spot by beating an almost full-strength Eborian side in Faro.

Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard had given Eboria plenty to think about in the first half. Lukaku and Hazard scoring good goals from set pieces, whilst Eboria’s goal also came from a corner- a header by Daniel Ayandele.

Lukaku stretched Belgium’s lead in the second period to 3-1, which would give them top spot and the possibility of avoiding the Germans- favourites in Group H.
Eboria chased the game, pulling a goal back, following a goalmouth melee. Henry Thomas wickedly volleyed the ball past Courtois.

In the end, the equaliser never came. It wasn’t a bad time to lose though- results in Group H have meant that Costa Rica take top spot and Germany runners-up. This means Belgium and Germany are paired up and Costa Rica will play Eboria.

Not to take anything away from Costa Rica, but Eboria will much prefer playing against the Central Americans. This loss felt a bit like a win in the end!

Italy 4-0 Australia

It was too little, too late for the Azzuri, as they crashed out with a big banging 4-0 thumping over Australia- who may have already been at the airport. A brace from Immoble, along with Bellotti strikes and a Sainsbury own goal completed the rout for Italy.

Eboria will face Costa Rica and Belgium play Germany in the next round.

Marida 3-1 Nigeria

Marida saw off Nigeria 3-1 to take top spot and confirm their passage to the second round of the finals tournament. Rolando (two) and Césaro secured the  victory with well-taken goals. Césaro’s goal had come on the counter as Nigeria pressed for an equaliser, after Victor Moses had scored- ten minutes into the second half.

At the half Marida had looked comfortable, with two precision strikes from Rolando – that’s six strikes in three games for him.

Brazil 4-3 Mexico

Neymar came to the rescue for Brazil, who faced their first ever exit a the group stages as they were 2-1 and 3-2 down to Mexico. It showed how off their game the Mexicans were in the opening game ( a humiliating 5-1 loss to Marida). Mexico had chances to seal the game, deservedly leading for an hour of the match.

In the end, the big match players shone through- leaving Brazil with a mouth-watering tie against Spain in the second round, Mexico go home with their heads held high.

Marida will face Denmark in their second round match. It is a match that Marida must fancy their chances in.

Eboria beat Australia 4-0, as Italy & Belgium draw, meaning the Golden Stars go through with one game to play.

Eboria’s win over Australia has given them breathing space before the final game against Belgium. 4-0 did not tell the full story between these two. For much of the game, there was not much between the two sides.

Eboria took the lead in the fourth minute, with Henry Thomas making a clever cross-run between the Aussie defence. Wilcox played him in and he turned a curled the ball into the far corner, past a helpless Mat Ryan.

Australia came back and created some good chances, with Juric and Cahill making Chambers work hard to keep them at bay. Australia were looking for the equaliser before half time, which led to their downfall, as Eboria caught them on the counter. Wilcox fed in Aaron Johnson, who crossed an early ball into Roman Baric. Baric struck with a sweet volley past Ryan, deflating the Australian team.

Eboria regained control of the game as the second period got underway, keeping possesion and slowing the pace down a little. Australia picked up their tempo and threatened the Golden Star’s defence. Once again, this left them open at the back. Baric scored his second, following another good run from Johnson and a great cross.

Five minutes later, a Wilcox corner was only half-cleared by Mat Ryan and his defensive unit. The ball fell invitingly into the path of Mike Mills, who drilled home a rocket from 30 yards. another minor error from the Aussies had resulted in a goal.

With Italy and Belgium drawing 1-1 in the earlier kick-off, Eboria are guaranteed to go through, regardless of the outcome of the final match against the favourites and group seeds- Belgium.

Eboria (4-3-3): Chambers, Cooper, Myers (sub Givens) , Vladic, Ayandele (C), Mills, Harrison, Wilcox (sub Langford), Johnson (sub Carter), Thomas, Baric.

World Nations Cup 2018 | Group E

Carlos Ricardo scored late on to save a point for Marida as they held one of the favourites, Brazil, to a 1-1 draw.

Brazil had started off the game in fine fashion, formulating quick pass and move sections to create chances- which Neymar Coutinho and Jesus all wasted. Ten minutes later, Marida changed their tempo and pressed from the front, catching Brazil off guard. For the next twenty minutes, you’d be forgiven for thinking Marida were the much higher ranked team. Rolando missed two opportunities to open the scoring.

Before the break, however, Neymar’s brilliance opened the doors for Brazil, with a good run and cross leaving Gabriel Jesus with an easy tap-in past Bruno.

Once the second half had started, Brazil remained in the ascendancy and looked to double their lead. Marida remained resolute at the back however.
Changing their  approach for the final 15 minutes, Marida brought more players forward, essentially four up front. With seven minutes left, Dani Alves pulled down Rolando on the edge of the penalty area. It was just outside- no penalty. Carlos Ricardo curled the resulting free kick into the top corner to even the score.

Both teams had minor chances to win as the game closed out, but could not convert.

Marida’s Head Coach Jorge Carvalho was delighted with his players afterwards. “I knew they could play like this- to be even with potential world champions! It is a delight to manage and coach this group- to see results like that, just amazing. So proud of them”, he said.

Marida play Nigeria in the final game. Unless Mexico beat Brazil in the other game, a draw should be enough  to guarantee safe passage through to the second round.

WNC18: Eboria stun Italy in Madrid

Eboria got off to a flying start in Madrid, with a wonderful win against Italy at the Wanda Stadium. Roman Baric caught veteran goalie Buffon off guard in the seventh minute with an early long range strike from outside the area.

Baric doubled the lead before half-time, when Jordan Wilcox and Henry Thomas caught Italy on the break, a quick pass through to Baric caught out Chiellini. The Eborian striker, rubbished during  his time in Serie A, controlled the ball nicely and  slotted past Buffon.

Italy never looked like they were really going to trouble the scorers, surprisingly low on energy for an opening game.

Both teams still have to face Belgium and Australia, with Eboria and Belgium holding the initial advantage.

Eboria line-up:
Chambers, Cooper, Myers, Ayandele (C), Vladic (sub Holland), Mills, Harrison, Wilcox, Johnson (sub Carter), Thomas, Baric.

Maridian hitman stuns ten-man Mexico in group opener

Marida stunned Mexico in their group opener in Seville. Spanish-based striker Rolando nabbed four goals (including one penalty) in their 5-1 demolition job against a decent Mexican side.

Mexico were 2-0 down before they were reduced to ten -men, when goalkeeper Ochoa pulled down Félix in the penalty box. Rolando slotted home his second and the game was beyond doubt. Chicharito got a consolation goal, before Rolando added another brace.

The first half had been quite even. The scoring had begun a few minutes before half-time, when Rolando and Félix combined to set up Césaro, He calmly slotted the ball home.
